Chennai, March 27, 2014: The National Design Competition 2014, India's largest design competition for engineering students, organized by CADD Centre Training Services (P) Limited, Asia's largest network of engineering design skill training centres, had attracted the participation of about 1,00,000 engineering and polytechnic students across the country.
This month-long event, involving four different rounds, was kick-started on February 2, 2014 and culminated with a grand final on March 3, 2014. The winners of the competition were awarded a trophy and cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 each.
Commenting about the event, Mr S Karaiadiselvan, Managing Director, CADD Centre, said that National Design Competition is an annual event to promote the talent of students in engineering design. It is India's the largest and only national level design competition conducted to identify the engineering design talent.
The first edition of the design competition was held in 2013. It attracted the participation of about 80,000 students across India. The number of participants has increased to 1,00,000 during the current edition.
Mr Karaiadiselvan noted that though India is emerging as a sought after outsourcing destination for engineering design, process and services, and there are more job openings for engineering designers, there is a need to create more awareness among students on the job opportunities available in engineering design.
Citing a report from a popular job portal, he said that every month more than 40,000 engineering design jobs are posted online by employers of different research & design, manufacturing and business sectors. It is estimated that this number will touch one lakh by 2020. But there is a huge skill deficit among students with respect to the adoption of engineering software.
"One of the important objectives of the design competition is to create awareness about the role of various global CAD software products for engineering design. Thanks to our promotional programmes and advertisements, we had reached the message to about 40 lakh students in India," he added.
The competition was meant for second, third and final year students of engineering colleges and polytechnics. Exclusive themes were given for students representing various mechanical (such as automobile, aeronautical and industrial production) and civil & architectural streams.
This month-long event had four rounds - the first round held at colleges and polytechnics of students, when students produced manually or computer based 2D drafts of their designs. The second round held at nearest CADD Centre premises. Students participating in the second round generated orthographic views using AutoCAD software. The third round was a regional round, conducted at different cities. In this round, students created 3D models of their designs – they used Creo/SolidWorks for Mechanical designs and Revit Architecture for civil & architectural designs.
The final round, which held on March 23, 2014 at Bangalore, hosted the conceptual designs of student participants. The winners of civil & architecture stream (Building Design) were: Mr Aditya Singh Parihar of Indore (Building Design) was Mr. Dhananjay Premraj Patil of Mumbai (Product Design). The winners were presented with the Best Designer Award and a cash prize of Rs 1lakh each.
The runners-up of the competition were: Mr. R. Biju of Marthandam (Building Design) and Mr. Devesh Jangir of Jaipur (Product Design). The runners-up received a trophy and certificates, along with the cash award of Rs 30,000 each. All the participants of the final round were awarded a Consolation Certificate and cash prize of Rs 10,000.

Top management is finding it important to engage employees in every aspect of business – from developing strategy to its final execution. It is no more the job of a CEO or a small committee to decide on the future course of business.
" Our special award recognizes organizations that are committed to employee engagement. We take great pride in giving away the award for 2013 to CADD Centre (P) Limited. CADD Centre's pioneering employer engagement initiatives in the education sector has helped it expand its network from a single centre in 1995 to about 400 in 2013.
This institution has built a culture of intrapreneurship. The company has an Employee Empowerment Manager and a support team to identify opportunities to bring the top management and the rest of the team closer. It goes one step further to turn its employees into franchise owners. About fifty percent of its current franchise owners are its own employees, which is a laudable achievement,” he added.
On receiving the special award, Mr S Karaiadiselvan, Managing Director, CADD Centre Training Services (P) Limited, said, “Employee engagement is actually good for business. But in order to make employee engagement happen, organizations have to not only create opportunities but also train the employees to make use of the opportunities. That way training is a pre-requisite to employee engagement.
He further said: “We have three main stakeholders when it comes to employee engagement:
1) our own staff, 2) our franchise partners, and 3) employees of our franchisees.
We provide a well established and rewarding career path for all our employees. Our objective is to help employees reach their full potential and make the so-called ordinary people deliver extra-ordinary results. Since they get exposure to all business functions, given the freedom they have to switch from one business function to another, they evolve into well rounded managers. When any of our experienced managers want to start off their own, we provide the option to become our own franchisees, which is a win-win for both of us.
When it comes to engaging our franchises, we start right from the scratch. We do not believe in one engagement model for all regions and markets. We jointly evolve the franchise business – our franchise owners take part in the process of identifying suitable locations, suitable courses, developing customized courses for their markets, and in designing marketing campaigns. Hence, our franchise success rate is over 95%. All our franchise partners, who are with us for more than three years are making profits.
We have what we call Internal Training Academy (ITA) that takes care of training the staff of franchise centres. Important among the training programs offered by ITA is the structured train the trainer programs offered to faculties. We get engineers, who developed the software products, to train our staff, and the staff in turn train all the faculty members of franchises. We also conduct PRIMO, a three day program that help franchise partners develop future leaders. This program touches upon all core areas of running a training business and also the ways to overcome various business challenges. It makes an individual equipped to handle the business with lot more maturity in the days to come.”
To Provide Customized Training in College Campuses to Make Students CAD-Ready
Chennai, April 22, 2013: Hindustan University, one of the leading institutions in Tamil Nadu has signed a MoU with CADD Centre, Asia's largest CAD training institution, to provide customized, and value-added CAD training programmes optionally for engineering students to improve their selection in campus interviews. The training will be provided to students at their own campuses, during college hours or beyond.
CADD Centre's courses will be available for the students of four engineering colleges (institutions) of Hindustan University located at Padur, Karapakkam, Guindy and Padappai in Chennai. The four colleges cater to 10,000 plus engineering students. Every year about 1,500 to 2,000 students are expected to opt-in for CADD Centre's customized CAD courses, to be offered to them at highly affordable cost.
Commenting about the MoU, Mr S Karaiadiselvan, Managing Director, CADD Centre, said “Our vision is to bring affordable, customized CAD education for engineering and polytechnic students to their own classrooms, leveraging our 350-strong pan India network of training centres.
Mr.Anand Jacob Verghese, the Pro Chancellor of Hindustan University said “The industry expects candidates to be CAD-ready, since product designs across all industries are done using CAD. By undergoing a CAD course, our students can cross the first level of selection instantly. When we have CAD-ready students, we have a better chance to attract many companies for campus recruitments”.
The Director of Hindustan University Mr.Ashok Verghese said “though students realize and understand the need to learn CAD, many of them are unable to learn CAD due to lack of time. So, when we offer the courses at the college premises itself, our students will be able to learn CAD without having to travel to outside our campuses. This CAD training within campus will enable the entire class to acquire CAD skills and be job ready,” he further added that the colleges propose to allocate specific timing for the CAD training.
CADD Centre has sixty similar college partnerships across India. While colleges teach engineering concepts very well, they may not have resources and time to impart practical CAD training on specific CAD products. Thus, with CADD Centre's partnership, they can fill the training gap and help students get jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities.
The Hindustan Group of Instituitons was founded in 1966 by, Late Dr.K.C.G.Verghese. In the Sixties, he had realized the need for an institution that offers non-formal technical education.
